Smoky, boozy hot chocolate

How do you make a mug of homemade hot chocolate even better? Add booze, of course! Mezcal or very peaty scotch whisky lends a welcome kick, and there's chilli in there for a bit of heat, too

Ingredients

  • cocoa powder 4 tbsp
  • whole milk 1 litre
  • chilli or cayenne powder a pinch (add a little extra if you like it spicy)
  • ground cinnamon a generous pinch
  • caster sugar 3 tbsp
  • single cream 100ml
  • dark chocolate 100g, chopped
  • extra-smoky mezcal or very peaty scotch whisky 4-6 tbsp

Method

  • Step 1

    Put the cocoa in a jug and mix in just enough milk to make a paste. Put the rest of the milk in a pan and heat until simmering. Add the chilli powder and cinnamon.

  • Step 2

    Whisk the hot milk into the cocoa paste until smooth, then pour back into the pan. Add the sugar, cream and chocolate, and heat gently, stirring, until combined. Stir in the mezcal or whisky and serve in mugs.
