Kuhn Rikon Allround 3-piece saucepan set
- Available from Kuhn Rikon (£179.95), Amazon (£179.95), Harts of Stur (£179.95)
Best induction pan set
Star rating: 5/5
This is a set of three saucepans which we found were incredible quality for the price and would be brilliant as a starter set, or if you're looking to refresh your most-used kitchen equipment. Made from the highest quality 18/10 stainless steel they have an almost professional look and feel. Each saucepan comes with a glass lid with a strainer built in and a pouring spout on each side, making it really easy to drain our pasta during testing.
On testing, we were impressed with how quickly the pans heated up and their responsiveness to heat change on our induction hob. The handles remained cool even when we were cooking on a high heat, but they will get hot if you put the pan in the oven (they're oven-safe up to 240C).
Ninja Zerostick stainless steel 3-piece pan set C63000UK
- Available from Ninja Kitchen (£119.99), Very (£119.99)
Best non-stick induction pan set
Star rating: 5/5
Ninja might be well-known for its appliances like air-fryers, but the brand also makes stand out cookware including this three-piece saucepan set. They are stainless steel with an impressive non-stick coating and each pan has a glass lid. On test we found absolutely nothing stuck to these pans, from sticky caramelised onions to porridge.
Thanks to the non-stick coating we found the pans very quick to clean, although they are dishwasher safe too. One of the things that impressed us most about this was was its responsiveness to heat. We brought 1.5 litres of water from cold to the boil in just four minutes.
HexClad Hybrid Pot 6-piece set
- Available from HexClad (£399), Amazon (£395)
Best stainless steel induction pan set
Star rating: 5/5
HexClad's pans feels luxurious even in their packaging as they're nestled in protective cloth bags. Once removed they look and feel beautiful with a glossy stainless steel exterior and distinctive honeycomb non-stick which is the brand's signature design.
In this set you get three saucepans, two with a long handle and the largest with a small handle on either side, each with a glass lid. Much like cast iron, HexClad's coating needs seasoning before the first use, but once that's out of the way you'll be left with a robust yet non-stick set of pans which are as brilliant for searing as they are cooking — making them perfect for stews like beef bourguignon.
Joseph Joseph Space folding-handle 6-piece cookware set
- Available from Joseph Joseph (£615), John Lewis & Partners (£615), Fenwick (£615)
Best ceramic induction pan set
Star rating: 4.5/5
There's no denying that, at £615, this cookware set is an investment. Although it's worth noting that, unlike some other brands in this list, Joseph Joseph don't count pan lids as a separate piece of cookware so in this set you get two saucepans (with lids), two frying pans, a sauté pan (with lid) and a casserole pan (with lid). We really liked that the pans come with three felt protectors so you can stack the pans without worrying about damage to the delicate (and highly effective) ceramic non-stick coating.
These pans have folding handles which are brilliant if you're short on storage space in your kitchen. They reacted well to temperature changes on our ceramic hob, although we did find that the pans struggled slightly with even heat distribution leading to some hot spots. Overall this is an extensive and attractive set which would set you up well in a new kitchen.
Circulon C Series SteelShield 3-piece pan set
- Available from Amazon (£189.99), Circulon (£190), Fenwick (£240)
Best hybrid pan set
Star rating: 4.5/5
This set is made up of three saucepans with a 1.4 litre, 1.9 litre and 2.8 litre capacity, each with a glass lid. They feature the brand's well-known design of concentric circles on the base which combine a non-stick coating with raised stainless steel peaks to make the base more durable. The distinctive design doesn't end there — the lid handles are in an 'S' shape which would fit in a modern kitchen, but won't be to everyone's taste.
On test we found these pans responded well to changes in heat on our induction hob. While the hybrid design makes it efficient for searing, we found the gaps between the ridges at the base of the pans meant that small amount of food gets trapped there, which would be difficult if you're making a smooth sauce like a béchamel.
Stellar Profile 5-piece draining saucepan set
- Available from Stellar (£139), Harts of Stur (£149), Amazon (£159.95)
Best easy-to-use induction pan set
Star rating: 4/5
With four saucepans and a non-stick frying pan, this set is comprehensive especially given the price. It has a professional look thanks to the high shine finish of the stainless steel exterior, and the long handles are comfortable to hold. We really like that each of the saucepans has lips on both sides for easy pouring and the lids all have built-in draining holes too.
We found the pans offered impressive heat control which allowed us to gently cook our scrambled eggs to a custardy consistency over a low heat. Our American pancakes released from the frying pan with ease thanks to the effective coating, which also meant clean up was a breeze.
Judge Vista 3-piece pan set
- Available from Amazon (£64.99), Judge (£65)
Best affordable induction pan set
Star rating: 4/5
Perfect for sending your child off to university with, or restocking some of your kitchen essentials, this set of three saucepans from Judge is affordable yet sturdy. The stainless steel finish gives them an attractive look and although they're more lightweight than many pricier options we found they generally performed well on test.
Each saucepan heated up quickly and efficiently, and we liked that the gently curving sides allow you to get right into the corners when stirring. As expected the absence of a non-stick coating meant these pans were trickier to clean compared to others we've tested, but with a bit of soaking and elbow grease we were able to get all the ingredients off.
Do you need special pans for an induction hob?
The short answer is yes, you do need special pans for an induction hob. This is because induction hobs work by the positioning of a copper coil beneath the ceramic surface which works to generate heat in the pan itself. This essentially means your pans need a magnetic material to be able to transfer this heat.
Most modern saucepans are compatible for all surface types, especially if produced in the UK where induction surfaces are increasingly popular due to their energy efficiency.
What to look for when choosing a pan set
There are several factors to keep in mind when choosing a pan set. Saucepans and frying pans are some of the most-used equipment in of our kitchens and we recommend that you buy the best set that you can afford, given that the cost-per-wear will likely be pretty low.
The style of your kitchen is important to think about — pans come in all shapes and designs from classic French to sleek and modern.
Your storage space should also be a consideration in terms of the number of pans you'll need but also the design of the handles and lids.
