What is feta cheese?

Feta cheese is a brined cheese made from sheep's milk and originating from Greece. It's characteristically tangy, salty flavour and crumbly texture make it a staple in many Mediterranean-style dishes including salads and filo pastries as well as pasta and other warm dishes. It can be served cold cut up into squares in a salad or sprinkled over dishes as crumbs. It can also be baked or grilled whole and combined with sweet toppings like honey or sprinkled with herbs like oregano.

How long does feta last?

  • A pack of unopened, vacuum-sealed feta can last up to three months in the fridge.
  • Once opened, it should be consumed within a week and kept in its original brine or another saltwater solution to maintain its moisture and freshness.
  • Without brine, feta tends to dry out quickly and should be used within a few days.
  • For longer term storage, feta can be frozen for up to six months, though this may alter its texture slightly, making it more crumbly.
