Berbere spice blend

Make your own fiery Ethiopian blend to add to stews and soups



  • cardamom pods 1 tsp
  • fenugreek seeds 1 tsp
  • dried red chillies 2
  • coriander seeds 1 tsp
  • cumin seeds 1 tsp
  • cayenne pepper 1 tsp
  • ground ginger ½ tsp
  • sweet smoked paprika 2 tbsp
  • paprika (not smoked) 1 tbsp
  • garlic granules 2 tsp


  • Step 1

    Put the whole spices in a small pan and heat until fragrant, stirring so they don’t burn. Cool, then grind with a spice grinder or pestle and mortar. Stir in remaining spices and store in an airtight jar.

Kept in a small airtight jar, these spice blends will last for 2 months.
