Perfect with pork, as a baking ingredient or a simple porridge topper, apple sauce is easy (and quick) to make at home

Make your own apple sauce, then serve it in recipes such as roast pork, black pudding croquettes and roast goose. Also check out our collection of apple recipes for seasonal bakes, including apple sponge pudding, apple pie and apple crumble.

  • bramley apples 2 (about 600g), peeled, cored and chopped into chunks
  • golden caster sugar 1 tbsp
  • lemon ½, juiced
  • butter 25g, optional

  • Step 1

Tip the apples into a saucepan with the sugar, lemon juice and about 50ml water. Bring everything to a simmer, then cover the pan and cook the apples gently for about 10 mins until they collapse. Beat with a spoon to break them up completely. You now have perfectly good chunky apple sauce that needs nothing more than a grind of pepper.

  • Step 2

If you want a smoother, richer sauce you can push the apples through a sieve and reheat the smooth apple purée with the butter before serving.
