Make this classic bread sauce to accompany your Christmas main, then also check out our sourdough bread sauce and cranberry sauce.

Ingredients

  • 25g butter
  • 1 onion, grated
  • 600ml milk
  • 6 black peppercorns
  • 6 cloves
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 142ml pot double cream
  • 200g fresh white breadcrumbs

Method

  • STEP 1

    Melt the butter in a pan and cook the onion for 5 minutes until softened. Add everything else but the breadcrumbs and gently simmer for 15 minutes.

  • STEP 2

    Fish out the peppercorns, cloves and bay leaf then stir in the breadcrumbs and simmer for a few minutes (add a splash more milk if you like your sauce thinner). Season and pour into a warm serving jug or bowl.
