  • spring onions 1 bunch, sliced
  • garlic 3 cloves, sliced
  • root ginger a thumb-sized piece, grated
  • red chillies 2, sliced plus extra to serve
  • Chinese five-spice 2 tsp
  • star anise 1
  • brown sugar 2 tbsp
  • rice wine or dry sherry 4 tbsp
  • soy sauce 2 tbsp
  • shredded greens, green beans and tenderstem broccoli a 400g mix
  • sesame oil
  • sesame seeds 2 tsp, toasted
  • basmati rice steamed to serve

  • Step 1

Heat the oven to 160C/fan 140C/gas 3. Put all the ingredients except the greens, oil, seeds and rice in an ovenproof pot with a lid. Add 200ml water, stir well, then cover.

  • Step 2

Cook in the oven for 2 hours or until the meat is really tender. If you want a thicker sauce, scoop out the meat and boil hard for 5 minutes. Steam the greens, beans and broccoli until tender, and toss with a little sesame oil. Serve the beef with basmati rice and greens, and scatter over the toasted sesame seeds and a bit more chilli for colour if you like.
