Bosch CreationLine MUM5XW10 summary

Bosch don’t consider the MUM5XW10 just a stand mixer, rather it’s an all-round kitchen machine. As well as all the usual stand mixer suspects (flex beater, balloon whisk, dough hook and splash guard), this model comes with a variety of accessories for a range of food processing tasks: slicing and shredding discs and a food processor attachment.

Sitting landscape on the counter, its design and appearance steer away from traditional stand mixers, but that’s one of the reasons why we like it.

How easy is the Bosch CreationLine MUM5XW10 to use?

A quick scan of the manual is all that’s needed to get started. Features like the speed dial are conveniently placed and the tilt head release button is clear to see, but unobtrusive; it sits flush to the neck of the machine. The bowl and attachments are all simple to fit.

There’s a touchscreen control panel on the front of the machine which doubles as a weighing scale display and timer. Initially we were excited by the scales, which weigh in grams or pounds, but we were disappointed to see that it displays in increments of five grams, as this may be too vague for some recipes. Baking and pastry often require a precision level of measuring that this Bosch model simply won’t be able to provide. The count-up timer is useful, though.

All the accessories including the main bowl are dishwasher-safe for fuss-free clean up. We tested out the food processor attachment to see how it fared: it blitzed through cheese, potatoes and carrots with absolute ease. It’s definitely a useful accompaniment for bakes like carrot cake.

Attractive on the counter, Bosch also included a nifty automatic cable rewind feature to keep your work surface clear from annoying cables.

Results

All the stand mixer attachments move rhythmically around the bowl. Bosch have dubbed this 3D PlanetaryMixing and it’s designed to reach all around the bowl, incorporating every ingredient. This model also comes with an “automatic parking” feature: if you have to stop the stand mixer midway through mixing, the attachment automatically moves to the back of the bowl out of the way, allowing you full access to scrape down.

The meringue and chocolate fudge cake tests yielded impressive results. A thick, glossy meringue was achieved in just four minutes and the cake was light and fluffy.

The plastic dough hook struggled somewhat under the weight of the sticky cardamom bun dough and we found we had to scrape down the sides more often.

olive’s take: should you buy the Bosch CreationLine MUM5XW10?

If you’re after a versatile but powerful piece of kit, this Bosch machine is an impressive option. The landscape design is attractive and inviting, plus the hidden cord and accompanying storage bag are simple but welcome features that contribute to the tidy aesthetic overall.

It powered through the cake and meringue tests with gusto, producing exactly the results we were looking for, but if you’re a keen bread baker, there are other machines available that will serve you better.
