An easy but so good burger. Beef mince, capers and gherkins for the patty. A quick homemade tomato sauce is the best finishing touch. Best for a weekend treat or special midweek meal.

Ingredients

  • minced beef 500g
  • onion 1, finely diced
  • capers 1 tbsp, rinsed and roughly chopped
  • gherkins finely chopped to make 1 tbsp
  • egg 1
  • breadcrumbs 3 tbsp
  • flat-leaf parsley y small bunch, leaves chopped
  • Dijon mustard 1 tsp
  • Worcestershire sauce 1 tsp

tomato sauce

  • plum tomatoes 2 × 400g tins
  • shallots 2, finely diced
  • garlic 2 cloves, crushed
  • fresh thyme 1 tbsp leaves
  • vegetable oil 2 tsp

Method

  • Step 1

    To make the tomato sauce, combine all the ingredients in a pan and season. Cover and simmer over a low heat for 1 hour, or until the sauce is thickened. Allow to cool.

  • Step 2

    Mix all the burger ingredients and season well. Shape into 4 patties. Grill for 8–10 minutes, turning once. Serve in a bun or quarter ciabatta with the tomato sauce.
