This recipe for smoked mackerel on rye with horseradish cream and pickled radish makes for a great lunch or lighter dinner for one. The horseradish gives it a punchy kick

  • radishes 5, sliced
  • white wine vinegar 2 tbsp
  • caster sugar 1 tsp
  • soured cream 2 tbsp
  • horseradish cream or sauce 1 tbsp
  • rye bread 2 slices, toasted
  • peppered smoked mackerel 1 large fillet, shredded
  • dill a few fronds¬†
  • salad to serve


  • Step 1

    Put the radishes in a bowl. Mix the vinegar and sugar, season and pour over the radishes. Leave for 10 minutes.

  • Step 2

    Mix the cream and horseradish and season. Spread over the rye bread.

  • Step 3

    Top with the mackerel, the drained radish and some dill. Serve with a salad.
