Are Iceland donuts better than Krispy Kreme donuts?
Inspired by National Donut Week, team olive called in donuts from two opposing producers – Iceland supermarket and Krispy Kreme – to judge which one was best.
Iceland, the frozen-is-best supermarket, sent us a box of donuts recently, with a note claiming that their ‘light consistency’ and ‘airy texture’ made them better than Krispy Kreme donuts.
Such wild aspirations can only mean one thing: taste test! So we called in a fresh batch of both types of donut, matched up similar flavours, and asked our colleagues to taste them blind. Here are the results:
Classic glazed
Winner: Krispy Kreme
Our tasters found the Krispy Kreme donut lighter than its counterpart, and were able to eat far more of it. But both were well liked, and both were crowned the overall winners of the taste test.
Chocolate and sprinkles
Winner: Krispy Kreme
More like this
There wasn’t much between these two, but Krispy Kreme had ‘crunchier’ sprinkles according to our tasters. And the quality of chocolate seemed better than it was on the Iceland donut.
Chocolate filled
Winner: Krispy Kreme
Third in a row for KK. Simply because the chocolate within tasted more genuine – the Iceland donut filling ‘tasted more like Nutella’ (but perhaps that’s a good thing?)
Strawberry showstopper
Winner: Iceland
We picked the most outrageous, strawberry-flavoured (or pink-coloured, rather) donut from each box, and pitted them against each other. This time, Iceland won! Because the cream filling was lighter and more authentic – Krispy Kreme’s tasted a bit like ‘whipped fat’ to one of our tasters.
Average price per donut
Krispy Kreme: £1.20
Iceland: 70p
