The perfect pick-me-up on a chilly winter night, this Christmas punch blends red wine with cherry brandy, plenty of fresh spices and citrus. Best served warm and garnished with cinnamon sticks

- 750ml red wine (something unoaked is best)
- 150ml cherry brandy or liqueur
- 1 cinnamon stickplus extra to garnish
- 2 star anise
- 4 cloves
- 2 small or 1 large orangessliced
- 100g soft light brown sugar
- 3 small slices ginger
- a generous grating nutmeg
- 4 cardamom podsbruised

Gently simmer all of the ingredients for 10 minutes without boiling. Leave to steep for 30 minutes. To serve, gently warm through and pour into mugs or heatproof glasses, and garnish with the extra cinnamon sticks.
