  • 400g beef mince
  • ½ small red onion
    grated
  • 1 tsp garlic salt
  • for frying vegetable oil
  • 4 slices mature cheddar
  • 4 burger buns
    halved and toasted
  • 4 tbsp mixed with 2 tbsp mayonnaise
  • soft lettuce leaves
  • horseradish cream

BEET RELISH

  • 100g cooked beetroot
    diced
  • chopped to make 2 tbsp gherkins
  • finely chopped to make 1 tbsp red onion

Method

  • step 1

    Toss the relish ingredients and leave to sit.

  • step 2

    To make the burgers, put the mince, onion and garlic salt in a bowl. Season with pepper and mix well, then divide into four balls. Use a spatula to squash each into a flat patty.

    Brush each patty with oil then fry in a hot frying pan for 2 minutes on each side until cooked through. Add a slice of cheese to each burger and either cover the pan with a lid until it melts or flash under a hot grill.

  • step 4

    Spread the toasted bun halves with the horseradish mayo. Top 1/2 of them with lettuce, a burger, then a spoonful of the relish. Top with the remaining bun halves and serve.
