Protein isn't just for bodybuilders. It is essential for our overall health and everyday bodily functions. We need an adequate amount of protein to build and repair cells, produce enzymes that help break down food, and maintain a strong immune system to protect against illness.

It also supports muscle development, helps keep energy levels stable, promotes fullness, and plays an important role in exercise and recovery. But for those who don’t eat animal products such as meat, fish, dairy or eggs, meeting daily protein requirements can be more difficult without careful planning.

To make sure that you're getting enough, consider investing in a vegan protein powder. These have been specially formulated for a plant-based diet and will get you closer to your daily protein quota. Just make sure that you continue to eat a varied and balanced diet which includes tofu, nuts, beans and pulses – all great sources of plant-based protein – instead of relying solely on the powder. You'll get plenty of other important nutrients from these whole foods, including fibre which supports gut health.

Hermosa vegan protein powder

Hermosa Vegan Protein Powder on a white background with an olive black and white top rated badge

Best premium vegan protein powder

Star rating: 5/5

This premium vegan protein powder really stood out for its refined formulation and smooth finish. Made from a carefully balanced blend of high-quality plant proteins, it mixes effortlessly with water to create a creamy, lump-free shake that feels indulgent rather than chalky.

We especially appreciated that Hermosa uses high-quality, grass-fed whey, natural sweeteners, non-GMO sources, and avoids artificial additives, so it is easier to digest compared to other products we have tried.

Both the vanilla and chocolate flavours are subtle yet still with a natural sweetness, making it ideal for daily use without becoming overpowering. It is also perfect for smoothies as the flavour won’t dominate. While it sits at a higher price point, the quality, taste and texture justify the investment for those looking for a more luxurious plant-based protein option.

Dr Vegan Protein and Creatine Superblend

Best clean protein powder

Star rating: 5/5

This no-nonsense vegan protein powder impressed us with its straightforward yet effective formulation. Designed for those who prioritise performance and transparency, it blends plant protein with added creatine to support strength, recovery and muscle function.

We noted that the texture is smooth for a clean blend, though slightly thicker than standard protein powders, and it mixes well with both water and plant milk. A major plus for us was the minimal ingredient list, making it a great choice for anyone avoiding unnecessary fillers or sweeteners. Overall, it’s a solid, functional option for fitness-focused users.

WelleCo Nourishing Protein

best vegan protein powder

Best pea vegan protein powder

Star rating: 5/5

We were genuinely impressed with the quality of this powder, made from a blend of pea and rice protein. The texture is silky and smooth when mixed with water, making this easily sippable as it is, no need to blend into a smoothie.

One big pro for testers was the addition of pre- and probiotics, turmeric, açai powder and psyllium which combine to support energy levels and good gut health.

Free Soul Vegan Protein Blend Chocolate

best vegan protein powder

Best hemp vegan protein powder

Star rating: 4.5/5

There are a lot of extra benefits to this vegan protein powder. Created with women in mind, it contains maca for hormone balance, B vitamins for hair and nails, as well as magnesium, iron, calcium which support mood and energy. It also contains 20g protein per 30g serving.

The flavour is rich and chocolatey, without being too artificial or leaving a cloying aftertaste.

Protein Works Vegan Wondershake

best vegan protein powder

Best overall vegan protein powder

Star rating: 4.5/5

This vegan protein powder really stood out to our testers for quality, texture and taste. It becomes like a thick milkshake when mixed with water and doesn't taste too sweet, despite using the sweetener sucralose.

It contains an impressive 20g protein per 25g serving and comes in at 94kcals. It's also a great keto option.

MyVegan Plant Protein Superblend Caramel

MyVegan Plant Protein Superblend Caramel

Best flavour vegan protein powder

Star rating: 4/5

If you've got a bit of a sweet tooth, this protein shake is for you. It has a strong caramel flavour that feels decadent, but with 21g protein per 28g serving, this is more than just a treat. Testers noted the easily digestible type of protein used and felt this offers a lot for the fairly low price.

Nuzest Clean Lean Protein Coffee Coconut & MCTs

Nuzest Clean Lean Protein Coffee Coconut & MCTs

Best vegan protein for fitness fanatics

This high-quality pea protein contains 9 essential amino acids and medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) – a type of supplement popular among athletes and bodybuilders. As well as being keto-friendly, it provides 18g per 25g serving.

We tried the flavour Coffee Coconut & MCTs which is more coconut than coffee but we found the combination a winner.

MyVegan Clear Vegan Protein, Strawberry

MyVegan Clear Vegan Protein, Strawberry

Best clear vegan protein

This could be a great option if you're look for an alternative to the creamy protein shakes that are most common. This product is more akin to a squash and can be mixed with water for a light, refreshing drink. It has a lower protein content than many products we've tested so won't be a good option for high performance athletes or weightlifters but it still offers 10g of protein per serving.

There's a wide choice of flavours on offer and we tried strawberry which we found fruity and refreshing.

Available from:
MyProtein (£16.49/320g)
