Many of us like to start our morning with the ritual of a coffee. Plunging a cafetiere, grinding beans, tamping a portafilter, frothing milk – it's all part of the joy. But, have you considered replacing your morning brew with a cup of mushroom coffee?

Functional and medicinal mushrooms are a popular trend right now, with claims that they can help with focus, energy, stress and immunity. As the research currently stands, there is not enough evidence to fully validate any of the health benefits of these mushrooms.

If you are considering trying out a mushroom coffee but are curious about how it'll compare to your usual cup of joe, we've taste tested some of the leading brands to see if we can tell the difference in flavour.

Innermost The Wellness blend

Innermost The Wellness Blend

Best mushroom coffee

Star rating: 5/5

This powder is a blend of mushrooms – including chaga, cordyceps, maitake and reishi – and arabica coffee, with 1.5g of coffee per serving.

We were impressed with this product on test, feeling that it closely resembled instant coffee in both ease of use and flavour. We mixed it with hot water and milk and found the flavour to be mild and pleasant. There's no added sugar, additives or preservatives, and we liked that the packaging would be easy to store or take on the go.

Available from:
Innermost (£34.95)
Selfridges (£39.99)

Verve Honest Mushrooms mix

Verve Honest Mushroom Mix

Best mushroom coffee for high potency

Star rating: 4.5/5

This powder from Verve delivers a high dose of 12,400mg medicinal mushrooms per serving, including lion's mane, reishi, cordyceps and chaga. The brand claims the combination of honest mushrooms and adaptogens (like ashwagandha) will enhance overall wellbeing by boosting energy, reducing stress and increasing focus.

On test, we found the flavour similar to a hot chocolate powder, if a bit sweet for our taste. You can mix it with water or milk, and it dissolved easily when stirred.

Available from:
Verve (£49)

Spacegoods Rainbow Dust

spacegoods rainbow dust

Best flavoured mushroom coffee

Star rating: 4/5

This powder from Spacegoods has an chocolatey, slightly raw cacao flavour that is tasty both hot and cold. We found it mixed really easily, but it's worth noting it should be mixed with milk or an alternative rather than water.

The powder is a premium blend of adaptogens and mushrooms, including lion’s mane, cordyceps and chaga, with 85mg caffeine per serving. Vegan-friendly and gluten-free, with no artificial additives, it comes in convenient, resealable packaging.

Available from:
Amazon (£29.25)
Spacegood (£39)

Free Soul Wake mushroom coffee

Free Soul Wake mushroom coffee

Best everyday mushroom coffee

Star rating: 4/5

Free Soul's mushroom coffee combines Arabica coffee with a combination of lion's mane, reishi, shitake and maitake mushrooms, as well as other ingredients like ashwagandha, maca, turmeric and salt. Each portion delivers 65mg caffeine, and the brand claims the formulation is made with women in mind.

We found this mushroom coffee was far less sweet than many we tried, with a deep, rich and earthy flavour. It's worth noting that we found the turmeric taste came through, which some people might find strange.

Available from:
Free Soul (£30)

Four Sigmatic Achieve organic coffee

Four Singmatic Achieve organic coffee

Best mushroom coffee for similarity to coffee

Star rating: 4/5

This product is the one that most closely resembles coffee out of all of the mushroom coffees on this list. It's made up of ground organic coffee with chaga and lion's mane mushrooms, and can be used in the same way as you would coarsely ground coffee – in a cafetiere or filter coffee machine.

We noticed that after drinking this mushroom coffee, we felt calm, focused and ready to start our day, although this wasn't noticeably different compared to drinking regular coffee.

Available from:
Amazon (£14.99)
iHerb (£18.25)
Ocado (£20)

Cheerful Buddha lion's mane mushroom coffee

Cheerful Buddah Lion's Mane Mushroom Coffee

Best affordable mushroom coffee

Star rating: 3.5/5

This mushroom coffee is made up of arabica ground coffee infused with lion's mane mushrooms as well as MCT coconut oil, ashwagandha and cacao, with each serving containing 350mg of lion's mane. Although the brand claims you can use this in an espresso machine, cafetiere or filter coffee machine, we found the grind size far too coarse for espresso, and we'd only recommend it for coarser brewing methods.

On test, we found it had an earthy flavour and was more bitter than a regular coffee.

Available from:
Holland & Barrett (£14.99)
Amazon (£16.55)

What is mushroom coffee?

The definition of mushroom coffee varies a little from brand to brand and product to product. Broadly, the term refers to coffee, usually coarsely ground coffee, that has been combined or infused with mushrooms.

These mushrooms aren't ones you'll find in the supermarket, though. The compounds extracted from these medicinal mushrooms are adaptogens, which are claimed may help with a host of health issues, including stress, concentration and energy.

The mushrooms commonly used in mushroom coffee include:

  • Lion's mane
  • Chaga
  • Reishi
  • Shitake
  • Maitake
  • Cordyceps

How we test mushroom coffee

When testing mushrooms coffees, we conducted a taste test, considering elements like appearance, taste, flavour and texture.

We also consider sustainability in our tests, and assessed the packaging of each product for ease of use and whether it can be recycled.
