Hot spiced cherry cup

The perfect pick-me-up on a chilly winter night, this spiced cocktail blends red wine with cherry brandy, plenty of fresh spices and citrus. Best served warm and garnished with cinnamon sticks

  • red wine (something unoaked is best) 750ml
  • cherry brandy or liqueur 150ml
  • cinnamon stick 1, plus extra to garnish
  • star anise 2
  • cloves 4
  • oranges 2 small or 1 large, sliced
  • soft light brown sugar 100g
  • ginger 3 small slices
  • nutmeg a generous grating
  • cardamom pods 4, bruised


  • Step 1

    Gently simmer all of the ingredients for 10 minutes without boiling. Leave to steep for 30 minutes. To serve, gently warm through and pour into mugs or heatproof glasses, and garnish with the extra cinnamon sticks.
