Our local expert's personal recommendations
"I’ve lived close to the river near Richmond for the past 10 years and watched the food scene change enormously, with exciting openings alongside neighbourhood favourites. I still love discovering somewhere new worth shouting about – particularly when it celebrates Richmond’s biggest draw: its beautiful riverside setting. I’m always looking for places that feel warm and relaxed but offer a menu you’ll daydream about afterwards. My new personal favourite, Tower House, serving Mediterranean-inspired dishes cooked over fire, does just that." Lily Barclay, olive team member

Best places to eat and drink in Richmond
Tower House, Bridge Street
From the team behind Gold in Notting Hill, Tower House brings confident, produce-led Mediterranean cooking to one of Richmond’s best riverside spots. The garden is a real draw, with a glass roof that opens overhead on warmer days and sunset views across the Thames and towards Twickenham Bridge. Inside is just as chic, with grand open fireplaces, indoor trees and comfortable, candlelit seating giving the dining room a relaxed but polished feel.
Executive chef Theo Hill oversees both restaurants and the menu focuses on sharing dishes with plenty cooked over fire. Dishes arrive as and when they’re ready rather than in a fixed order – so embrace the sharing spirit rather than expecting traditional courses.
Jamon croquettes with manchego and alioli, tuna tartare with watermelon, jalapeño and lime and roasted artichoke raviolo are standout small plates.
For something more substantial, order the wood-roasted whole seabream or chargrilled lamb with rainbow chard and pinenuts for the table, while the chargrilled squid with rocket, lemon and chilli is another highlight.
Save room for the basque cheesecake or one of the excellent cocktails if you prefer a liquid dessert. thisistowerhouse.com

Bingham Riverhouse, Petersham Road
The Bingham is one of Richmond’s closely guarded secrets, located in a smart Georgian townhouse tucked away behind the Thames Towpath. It's also home to a sweeping high-ceilinged lounge with a large roaring fireplace, striking artworks and first-rate cocktails which are expertly mixed behind a stylish bar.
Chef Vanessa Marx has crafted a simple but sophisticated menu which lets the high-quality ingredients speak for themselves, highlights include wild mushroom on sourdough bruschetta with truffle and baked diver-caught scallops with sea vegetables, preserved lemon and garlic butter. binghamriverhouse.com

Petersham Nurseries Café, Petersham Road
Find seasonal, Italian-inspired dishes at this bucolic café set within a glasshouse. Tuck into dishes of, say, risotto with peas, garden mint and Parmesan, or spiced chickpeas with broccoli, courgette and nigella seed flatbread. Several ingredients come from Petersham itself, and, among others, you’ll see herbs, cherries and salsify growing along its walls.
Supplementary produce comes from a close-knit network of small producers inclding Haye Farm, run by Harry Boglione, a son of Petersham’s founders. In summer, you can dine outside beneath a canopy of wisteria surrounded by roses. petershamnurseries.com

Napoli on the Road, Red Lion Street
Find this little gem of a pizza restaurant hidden in the back streets of Richmond. A cut above your regular pizza joint, it's a perfect spot for a date night or special occasion. The pizza here is unrivalled, created by chef and owner Michele Pascarella who won Global Pizza Maker of the Year in 2023. Celebrated for his original take on pizza, the shifting seasonal menu includes tempting flavour combinations such as roasted pumpkin, rosemary and blue cheese. Fred not, you can still order the classics, like margherita.
On our visit, we were deeply impressed by the lighter than air, chewy base and exceptional quality of the toppings, along with the friendly service and well-paired wine list.
We enjoyed everything from the pizza mains, to the punchy starters, such as the fresh fennel salad and spicy slice topped with pepperoni. We advise wearing loose trousers, so you can squeeze in a vast wedge of tiramisu and a cloud of boozy crème diplomate and mille-feuille pastry for dessert. napoliontheroad.com

Stein’s outdoor Bavarian restaurant, Richmond Bridge
Located right on the river, this bustling Bavarian spot offers authentic dishes and German beers served in traditional steins. The menu includes chicken, pork or wiener schnitzel with chips, warm pretzels, meat platters and Bavarian potato salad. The star of the show, however, has to be their sausage plates. Choose from spicy beef, traditional pork, curry wurst or Vienna sausage – all come with mashed potatoes and homemade sauerkraut. Washed down with a cold beer, it really is joyous.
The charm of Stein's is that it's not fancy by any means. Think sharing tables and umbrellas for cover, but that makes it all the more fun. If you're looking for the beer garden experience, this is it. richmond.stein-s.com

Madhu's Brasserie, Sheen Road
Madhu’s contemporary Indian restaurant has expanded from central London’s Harvey Nichols to a smart neighbourhood space in Richmond. The glass-fronted brasserie is full of comfy booths as well a bar overlooking an striking tandoor oven and robata grill, where you can spy on an array of inviting looking food before you order.
Presentation is excellent, with food served in copper dishes with an array of intriguing garnishes. For a very moreish appetiser order the palak patta chaat – British samphire and battered spinach leaves with chilli, turmeric, fresh coriander, yogurt and taramind, or the succulent robata chops that are steeped in aromatic spices and can be cut with a butter knife. Other highlights included the king prawns cooked in a creamy coconut curry with ginger, mustard seeds and curry leaves. There’s also vegetarian and vegan thalis on offer, which looked bountiful when emerging out of the kitchen. Wrap up with a cooling badam kulfi – Indian ice cream made with clotted cream and almonds for a very fulfilling end to the meal. madhusbrasserie.com

Knoops, George Street
Despite the fact that multiple locations are emerging across London, Knoops still takes hot chocolate extremely seriously. The extensive menu covers a range of cocoa percentages, origins and milk, and you are free to choose your strength — from a creamy 34% milk to a punchy 85% dark — and add custom extras such as orange zest, chilli or sea salt. Though the stores tend to fill up at peak times, each cup is still skilfully blended for a custom, luxury experience. knoops.com

Peggy Jean, Riverside
Peggy Jean comes from the Daisy Green collection, which is known for its easygoing and innovative Australian menus, good coffee and popular lamingtons. Peggy Jean has a definite point of difference, set on a large barge overlooking the Thames in one of the most picturesque and most vibrant parts of Richmond.
The space is an Instagrammers dream, furnished in stylish parasols, greenery and lights, you can sit and admire the paddle boarders and row boats go by as you dine, and the sunsets are particularly impressive. Superb quality steaks are supplied by HG Walter and there's a decent seasonal fish menu – for a real treat, order the wild day boat sea bass with sea vegetables, wild garlic, dill hollandaise and samphire. There's also a creative cocktail and dessert menu: the watermelon margarita is perfect if you're dining in a group and is served in a whole watermelon on a stand with a tap. daisygreenfood.com

Brindisa, Whittaker Avenue
Brindisa has made its first venture into the London suburbs, opening an spacious restaurant overlooking the River Thames in one of the finest spots in Richmond. The lively tapas bar has been refurbished with radiant Spanish tiles, comfy booths, an imposing bar and an open kitchen. Despite its popularity, the staff are warm and generous with their time and knowledge, talking you through their recommendations and helping you order just the right amount.
Dishes are meant for sharing tapas-style and has all of the Spanish staples, such as crisp ham croquettes, patatas bravas and delicately sliced octopus served with capers, smoked paprika and olive oil. If you’d like to try something slightly more unconventional, the creamy rice cooked with foraged wild mushrooms and truffle is incredibly moreish with a beautiful, earthy taste. Brindisa also serves Sunday roasts with a Spanish twist – think anchovy butter greens and jamon ibérico fat roast potatoes, perfect for a leisurely lunch with friends or family, they serve child-size portions for £8 too. brindisakitchens.com

Kiss The Hippo, Sheen Road
Kiss The Hippo, so named to mark the coffee shop’s environmental ethos (all cutlery, straws and cup lids are fully compostable), offers a bright and airy hangout to Richmond’s George Street. Up front, a vast coffee station caters to the trendiest of coffee geeks, with niche brews including Ugandan Nitro Cold Brew coffee and Japanese-style iced filter coffee, dripped through a Kalita over ice cubes to bring out delicate elderflower and bergamot notes.
Pastries and brunch dishes are prepared by the chef consultant from London’s Mandarin Oriental Hotel. Tuck into tiny Sicilian apricot and mango tartlets with a delicate vanilla scent, or super light cinnamon rolls with cinnamon paste swirled through and white chocolate glaze slathered on top. kissthehippo.com

144 on the Hill, Richmond Hill
144 on the Hill is an majestic Georgian Hotel just a stone’s throw from Richmond Park. While the interiors are lavish, the atmosphere is warm and laid-back. An outdoor terrace has been transformed with chunky blankets, fairly lights and outdoor heaters to make for a cosy, alpine-like experience.
The fondue menu for two includes a warming glass of mulled wine to get you started. The artisan cheese fondue is extremely generous and almost impossible to stop eating. It comes served with Parisian potato salad, steamed broccoli, a charcuterie board and bread. It’s easy to while away a few hours as the menu is so abundant and the setting so comfortable. If you’re feeling up to it, you can finish with a rich Belgian chocolate fondue served with strawberries and marshmallows. Imagine the snow and you can pretend you’re just back from a day on the slopes. 144onthehill.co.uk/winter-wonderlounge
