  • Easy

These are super-easy and very cool-looking cheese straws. Black sesame seeds can be found in Chinese supermarkets, delis and larger supermarkets, but normal sesame seeds can be used.

  • ready-rolled puff pastry 2 sheets, about 425g
  • egg 1, beaten
  • mature cheddar 80g, finely grated
  • black sesame seeds 2 tbsp

  • Step 1

Heat the oven to 220C/fan 200C/gas 7 and line a baking tray with baking paper. Lay out 1 of the sheets of puff pastry and brush some of the beaten egg over the surface. Now scatter over the grated cheddar and season with pepper. Lay the other sheet of pastry on top and firmly press all over to seal. Brush the top of the pastry with more egg, and scatter over the sesame seeds.

  • Step 2

Slice the pastry into thumb-width lengths, and twist like a rope. Lay on the baking tray, pressing down each end (you might have to cook in two batches). Bake in the oven for 15-20 minutes, or until crisp, golden and firm to the touch.
