This steak and celeriac dish is quick and easy, yet delivers big flavours meaning that you can cook something imaginative midweek. Earthy celeriac is a great alternative to chips and works perfectly with the rich red wine sauce.



  • celeriac 1 small, peeled and cut into chunks
  • milk
  • oil
  • sirloin steaks 2, thick cut
  • red onion 1, sliced
  • red wine 1 glass
  • brown sugar 1 tsp


  • Step 1

    Simmer the celeriac in water for about 15 minutes or until it is tender. Drain and mash with milk and lots of seasoning.

  • Step 2

    Put a little oil in a hot frying pan and add the steaks, add the onion around the edges and cook for 2 minutes. Turn the steaks over and stir the onions around. After 2 minutes, add the red wine and brown sugar and bubble everything together to make a sauce. Season well and serve with the mash.
