Abel & Cole, the organic box scheme giant, offer a variety of weekly fruit and veg boxes, as well as a huge range of meat, fish, dairy, drinks, toiletries and cleaning products. We tested out their £11 a week Cheese and Wine Club, a simple wine subscription with a food-pairing bonus.

Ordering is straightforward, although the wine and cheese club option is not immediately obvious on the website – we had to enter it in the search bar to find it. There’s a minimum order of £12, with a flat £1.50 delivery charge, so the wine club order works best as an added extra alongside a larger delivery. You can cancel the club subscription at any time.

Currently there are only two wines – red or white – offered for the wine and cheese club, but they are both from the excellent Purato winery in Sicily whose ‘green to the extreme’ philosophy ticks all the sustainability boxes – organic, carbon neutral, vegan, and packaged in 100% recycled and recyclable materials. While the wine stays the same, it's the cheese that changes each week – we received a big wedge of Wyfe of Bath cheese in perfect condition. No tasting notes are included in the box in order to keep costs down, but it’s easy to look the wine and cheese up online if you’re interested. Plans are afoot to offer a deluxe club option with monthly changing wines and comprehensive tasting notes. Abel & Cole are pioneers of low-plastic and compostable packaging and their boxes are returnable for re-use.

At £11, this combination is £2 cheaper than ordering the items separately and is great value for everyday drinking with cheese alongside. An easy add-on to Abel & Cole’s rightly popular box schemes.
