Les Amis, Edinburgh: restaurant review

We head to French brasserie Les Amis in Edinburgh for roast duck, set menus and charcuterie at the deli. This former tool shop on Morrison Street is a dream come true for father daughter duo Peter and Alison McGrail.

In a nutshell

Les Amis brings a little bit of Paris to Edinburgh in a former tool shop on Morrison Street. The restaurant is a dream come true for Peter and Alison McGrail, the father and daughter team who run it. It’s a classic brasserie style affair open from breakfast until close, with a ‘deli to go’ on the side. Pretty buzzy during the day, and a bit more chilled during dinner.

Who’s cooking?

We didn’t glean the name of the chef; the owners prefer a team effort approach at Les Amis. Definitely French though – one look at the menu confirms that.


Menu know-how

Both lunch and dinner menus have fixed prices for either two or three courses. There are four or five dishes to choose from for mains, and five for starters, but only three desserts – we could have done with more options in that department. Although we were pleased to see a classic apple tart and chocolate ganache on there.  


Must orders

You should definitely order l’escargots. Six grilled snails are beautifully presented with a garlic and parsley butter for dipping. 


What I’ll order next time

The pan roasted duck breast with Madeira sauce. We noticed it on the table behind us, and thought it looked like the perfect dish for an autumnal evening.


What’s the room like

As expected it’s very French brasserie in style. Lovely clean white brick tiles behind the bar with the name Les Amis adorning the wall. A comfortable mustard yellow leather bench stretches the length of the restaurant, and low slung lighting with retro light bulbs complete the look.

Although the lighting is slightly too bright in the dining area… you might want to hit the dimmer switch when you visit.


What we liked

That we didn’t find out the name of the chef! A little bit of intrigue is always good. The wine recommendations were excellent.


Fun fact

You can pick up a picnic from the deli counter if you don’t have time to sit down. There are a wide variety of wines and cheeses to choose from.


Price range

Good value to mid-range depending on whether you have lunch or dinner. Fixed price lunch at £14.95 for two courses, £18.95 for three and dinner at £19.95 for two courses and £24.95 for three.  House white wine is £16 and a decent Chablis is £30. There are plenty of fine wines to choose from too, should you have the budget.
