In a nutshell

Busy city-centre restaurant that takes a modern approach to Welsh food. We like the innovative use of locally sourced ingredients, including national treasures such as Welsh lamb, laverbread and Welsh rarebit.

Our review

Nestled between the cocktail bars of trendy Mill Lane sits Pitch; a new restaurant claiming to be the city’s first to specialise in casual dining and Welsh cuisine. Proprietor Benjamin Brown has more than a decade of experience from national high street chain Nando's, but Pitch represents a new and exciting departure for him.

Inside, trendy bare-bulb light fittings look great against a backdrop of exposed brick, and the industrial theme is offset by pretty vases of fresh flowers on every table. The outdoor seating is perfect for soaking up the sunshine while you dine.

Indecisive diners will have no trouble at Pitch – there’s a range of small plates on the menu, including Welsh lamb kebabs with minted yoghurt; garlicky buttered wild mushrooms; and Welsh smoked salmon with avocado (£4.50 each or three for £12.50, served with bread and olives).

Those with a heartier appetite needn’t worry though; the rest of the summer menu focuses mainly around burgers and steaks. The Welsh lamb burger comes with a cool, minted garlic aioli, whilst the ‘Hoff Burger’ is chunky, juicy beef topped with any combination of perl las or perl wen Welsh cheeses, crispy bacon, a fried free-range egg, half an avocado, grilled mushrooms or a Welsh rarebit topping.

Dessert is a fairly traditional affair, with choices such as chocolate brownie with local ice cream, or white chocolate and Merlyn liqueur cheesecake. For something less filling but equally delicious, pick one of the three dessert cocktails on offer – we’d opt for the Espresso Martini every time.

As with any restaurant based on Mill Lane, Pitch comes alive in the evenings and weekends… so it’s easy to see why the drinks menu is heavily focused on cocktails, with the gin-based concoctions served out of beautiful china teapots.

Perhaps because it’s a relatively new opening, the service on a busy, sunny Saturday afternoon can be a little slow; but with such a perfect people-watching location, perhaps it doesn’t even matter.

Bullseye: For a morning meal with a difference, head here for a quiet brunch instead of a busy dinner and order the Welsh laverbread omelette, which comes with hollandaise sauce and a chorizo crisp (£6.50).

Total price: £65 for two with drinks.
