In a nutshell
Contemporary dishes, comfort food and cocktails in opulent surroundings situated in Liverpool’s centre.
Who’s cooking
The joint management of District House, directors of Know Restaurants Steven Hesketh and Andrew Duckworth, have put in place head chef John Connelly to lead the creation of cuisine here, with an all-day dining slant that draws upon a host of influences.
What are they cooking
Starters with sophisticated flavour pairings include smoked salmon ballotine stuffed with crab and cream cheese, with caviar and dill oil; as well as slow-braised pork belly, apple purée, morcilla and madeira jus.
There’s everything from oriental salads to classic fish and chips and theatrical desserts with dry ice – the District sharing platter comes as an assiette of cakes, including cherry and almond tea.
What's the room like?
District House is big (it can fit some 600 across each of it spaces) but, remarkably, it still manages to feel welcoming and intimate despite its scale. Leather booths, twinkling candles, pink lighting, an open kitchen and two sweeping bar areas invite you in.

Menu must-orders
A starter of avocado on golden toasted briochewith red onion jam, cherry tomatoes, rocket, poached egg and mustard dressing was a winner – the individual components complemented each other well.
A main course of chicken breast was super tender thanks to a stint in the sous vide, while the accompanying potato fondant, truffle green beans and jus shone. Chocolate fondant with black cherry and Amaretto ice cream proved impossible to resist, with rivers of rich chocolate balanced by the sweet and refreshing ice cream.
The booze
Cocktails are the focal point of the drinks offering at District House, and the signature list reads well: Sake Spritz, Kentucky Iced Tea and Paint It Black (which combines Portobello Gin with Mr Black Coffee) are among our favourites.
The verdict
Designed with serving loyal locals in mind, District House is an atmospheric space that has plenty to offer all day, from brunch to evening cocktails. Food is polished and the merging of restaurant, bar and event space has been wholly successful.
