Slow cooked spiced red cabbage

This slow cooked red cabbage and apple dish spiced with cinnamon is so delicious it will outshine even the tastiest of roasts. Just 20 minutes of preparation is required from you.

Ingredients

  • red cabbage 1, quartered and shredded
  • Bramley apple 1, peeled and grated
  • red onion 1, halved and sliced
  • balsamic vinegar 2 tbsp
  • port a glass
  • dark muscovado sugar 3 tbsp
  • Chinese 5 spice 2 tsp
  • cinnamon stick 1
  • butter 100g, cut into cubes

Method

  • Step 1

    Heat the oven to 150c/fan 130c/gas 2. Put all the ingredients in an ovenproof casserole with a lid. Put over the heat, stir well then cook for 5 minutes until the butter has melted and everything is well mixed. Cover, transfer to the oven and cook for 2 hours. Season before serving.
